Opinion: Don’t look to Judeo-Christian principles for our values

KEVIN Donnelly, in the Opinion section last week, argued Australia’s freedom and democracy were based on Judeo-Christian values.

He mentioned the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Enlightenment as proof of the evolution of Judaeo-Christian thinking towards humanism and reason in Western civilisation.

The term “Judeo-Christian” refers to the fact that the Bible used by Christians includes the Jewish scriptures, as the Old Testament.

So the Bible stories of creation and the fall of man into sin, as well as the promise of a saving Messiah, are Jewish traditions.

The Old Testament includes the Torah, or the Law of Moses, which may be 3000 years old.
