Trump meets Palestine’s Abbas, pumps Middle East peace prospects

Donald Trump has confidently predicted a Middle East peace agreement is within grasp as he hosted Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas at the White House.

“We will get it done,” the US President said yesterday, flaunting his deal-making prowess during a first meeting with Mr Abbas that marked the start of an ambitious — some say quixotic — effort.

Brushing aside the complexities of a decades-old conflict that has bedevilled successive US leaders, Mr Trump told Mr Abbas that together with the Israelis they could bag “the toughest deal to make”.

“It is something that I think is, frankly, maybe not as difficult as people have thought over the years,” Mr Trump said, exuding his trademark bravado.

Mr Abbas, 82, — a veteran of innumerable US, European, UN and Arab peace initiatives — echoed Mr Trump’s upbeat tone.
