Donald Trump sees an opportunity in tangled relationships of the Middle East

Two days after the US presidential inauguration, former US House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich said if Donald Trump kept America safe and created “a lot of jobs,” then “everything else is noise”, presumably even recent impeachment talk.

Four months later, Gingrich could add another item to Trump’s putative fire-wall: a proposed Middle East peace deal.

After a whirlwind tour of Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Occupied Territories, Trump is promoting an audacious Middle East peace plan rooted in the common interest that ostensibly mortal enemies, Saudi Arabia and Israel, have in combating the rising power of Iran in the region.

It’s a modern version of the ancient proverb: “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”.
