Quest to have grandmother honoured for rescuing Jewish people during Holocaust

Judy Kaye is excited and proud. She’s finally achieved something she first started thinking about almost 30 years ago.

“My grandmother was the most wonderful woman and I am just grateful to be able to show some honour to her,” Ms Kaye said.

At the Israeli Embassy in Canberra, she has received an award honouring the bravery of her late grandmother during the Holocaust.

The story behind the award goes back to 1944 in Hungary.

Laslo Michnay was a Seventh-day Adventist priest. He and his wife Jolan Michnay lived with their six children in a church compound in Budapest.

It was a time when Jewish people were rounded up and forced to live in ghettos, facing persecution, deportation and death.
