Trump enlists secret weapon for Middle East diplomacy

A glamorous Egyptian-American is emerging as a key player in ­Donald Trump’s Middle East diplomatic initiative, which was initially derided but is increasingly being taken seriously in Washington.

The US President has entrusted son-in-law Jared Kushner with brokering a deal between Israel and the Palestinians.

But Dina Powell, who speaks fluent Arabic and made a fortune at Goldman Sachs before unexpectedly joining the Trump ­administration, is described by one diplomat as the mission’s “secret weapon”, with an influence that far exceeds her title of Deputy ­National Security Adviser.

Ms Powell was recruited to the White House by Mr Kushner’s wife, Ivanka, the President’s daughter. Although only 44, she is one of the most experienced White House officials, having served in several senior positions during the George W. Bush administration.
