In a recent court case it was suggested, incorrectly, that Jewish law prevents reporting a fellow Jew to the authorities in cases of wrongdoing – even concerning child abuse.
This matter has been dealt with under Australian law, and it is important the record is also set straight regarding the Jewish legal position.
Justice is a cherished value of the Jewish People, and has been since the days of the Bible. God told Moses, “justice, justice shall you pursue,” while the prophet Michah taught the people, “He has shown you … what is good … to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
There was a time, not very long ago, when Jews in other countries did not enjoy the access to fair and equitable treatment under the law that we all take for granted in Australia.
