Jewish leaders lose their followers, who demand free speech

One reason that Tony Abbott dropped his plan to allow more free speech was the vehement opposition of the “Jewish lobby” – a group of Jewish leaders who claimed that amending the Racial Discrimination Act would somehow lead to more anti-Semitism.

But speaking to a Jewish charity last week, I got the distinct impression from the audience that these leaders have lost their flock, which knows that laws against free speech helps their enemies, not them.

For one, don’t Jewish Australians in particular desperately need an honest debate about Islam? Don’t they need a debate about the reform of a faith that preaches hatred of Jews?
