Bishop George Browning on Netanyahu’s visit to Australia

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrives in Australia this week on an historic visit—it will be the first by a serving Israeli leader since the state was proclaimed in 1948.

But, ahead of his arrival, more than 60 prominent Australians have signed a statement strongly opposing the visit.

They have a number of concerns—in particular, the construction of settlements on Palestinian land in the West Bank and in East Jerusalem.

Meanwhile, the former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has joined Bob Hawke in saying the time has come to recognise Palestine.
