Carr defends ALP Palestine push after Beazley savages move

Former foreign minister Bob Carr has defended his push to reverse Labor’s long-held support of Israel after ex-Labor leader Kim Beazley savaged the proposal.

A resolution is being considered by the NSW branch of the Labor Party, calling for a future Labor government to extend unconditional and immediate diplomatic recognition to a state of Palestine.

Mr Beazley said in today’s Australian the resolution “is gesture politics and is simply not helpful”.

But the former NSW premier, who is behind the move, said Israel’s conduct in the West Bank necessitated the change.

“The Labor Party will always be committed to a two-state solution,” Mr Carr told Sky News.
