SUMMARY:Dr. Sue Silberberg about her book “A Networked Community”
DESCRIPTION:The Australian Jewish Historical Society in conjunction with th
e Australian Jewish Genealogical Society and the Lamm Jewish Library prese
nts:\nDr. Sue Silberberg\nSpeaking with Rabbi Emeritus Dr John Levi AM abo
 ut her new book:\n“A Networked Community”\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nIn 18
35 a renegade group of Tasmanians\, including Jewish emancipist Joseph Sol
omon\, disembarked in what was to become Melbourne. Thus\, as in the settl
ement of the continent itself\, Jews were at the foundation of colonisatio
n.\n\nUnlike many other settlers\, these Jews predominantly came from urba
n backgrounds and applied their experience to the formation of a new emanc
ipated conceptualisation of urban Judaism. In Melbourne there were no civi
l or political restrictions on the Jewish community\, and the political an
d social environment of a new city provided a unique set of opportunities.
Here Jews could live and work where they chose becoming active citizens i
n the formation of the colony.\,. As developers and builders they influenc
ed the formation of the city’s urban fabric\, while their intellectual a
nd economic connections brought new political and intellectual ideas and n
etworks to the colonial experience.\n\nThis was a community which remained
connected to mainstream Anglo-Orthodoxy\, while simultaneously realizing
that new freedoms required a response to religious practices which were re
levant to a new world.\n\nDr. Sue Silberberg is a historian\, curator and
arts administrator. She was educated at the University of Melbourne\, Mon
ash University\, Deakin University and the International Centre for the Co
nservation of Cultural Material (ICCROM). She holds a doctorate in History
from the University of Melbourne\, where she has been a research fellow a
t the eScholarship Research Centre. Previously Silberberg worked in both L
ondon and Victoria as a museum curator and director\, specialising in hist
oric buildings. She has held senior government positions within the arts a
nd was the director of the Cultural Festival for the 2006 Melbourne Common
 wealth Games.\n\nEnquiries to davidhmarlow@gmail.com or 0407 389 919\n\n
