Diplomatic flurry as Iran deadline looms

Washington:  World leaders are intensifying their lobbying for the continuation of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran or to reimpose sanctions on Tehran, which would mean scrapping the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The deal – sealed by US President Donald Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama with the support of China, Russia, Germany, France and Britain – eased sanctions on Tehran in exchange for commitments to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

Trump has long expressed deep distaste for the deal and has imposed a deadline of May 12 for its scrapping or modification, a position stridently opposed by Iran.

Trump’s recently appointed adviser, Rudy Giuliani, predicted on Saturday he would pull the US out of the agreement, pointing to the presence in the president’s inner circle of new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and long-time foreign policy hawk John Bolton.
