American student looking to study in Israel detained at airport

Israeli academics say a government decision to stop an American university student from entering the country to study could have dangerous implications for freedom and democracy.

Lara Alqasem has been held at the Tel Aviv airport for over a week, after Israel’s Interior Ministry blocked her from entering the country to study in a graduate program.

The Minister says Ms Alqasem was stopped because she had supported campaigns to boycott Israel because of its treatment of Palestinians.

But academics from across the country say the decision has far-reaching effects and they want it reversed.
