Please Explain podcast: Israel rules alleged pedophile Malka Leifer can be extradited to Australia

On Monday, the Jerusalem District Court handed down a judgment allowing the extradition of accused child sex abuser Malka Leifer to Australia.

The former principal of Melbourne’s ultra-orthodox Adass Israel girls school faces 74 charges of rape and child sexual assault against three former students.

Leifer fled Australia to Israel in 2008 after the allegations first emerged. The process to extradite her has stalled several times since it first began in 2014 and has so far involved more than 70 court appearances.

It’s likely Jerusalem’s decision will be appealed by the defence to the Supreme Court.

In this episode, Sunday Age editor David King is joined by The Age’s investigations editor Michael Bachelard to discuss the likelihood of Leifer’s extradition.
