Former celebrity chef Pete Evans’ Nazi denials questioned in wake of cartoon backlash

Under fire celebrity chef Pete Evans has again been hauled over the coals on social media for posts he made about Nazi Germany.

The avid conspiracy theorist sparked outrage on the weekend after sharing a cartoon featuring a symbol used by Nazis.

The image showed a caterpillar in a MAGA hat talking to a butterfly adorned with a sonnenrad — a Nazi symbol used by the Christchurch mosque shooter.

When Evans’ followers pointed out the origins of the symbol on the butterfly, he replied “I was waiting for someone to notice that”.

Amid the furore generated by the post, Evans denied he knew what a neo-Nazi was or that the cartoon he posted on Facebook contained a Nazi symbol, and claimed the post had been “misinterpreted”.

But those denials have been called into question after past social media comments resurfaced overnight.

In one Facebook comment responding to a post by a fan, Evans encouraged her to “have another look about the true history of Germany”.

Comedian Magda Szubanski retweeted the comments in the wake of the Nazi cartoon furore, writing: “Misinterpreted” BullSHIT!! It’s not just the cartoon… check his comments- a friend screen capped this image below.”

Evans also ‘liked’ a comment by one fan who wrote: “Everything we were taught about the Germans is 100 per cent the opposite of the reality that took place.”
