Australian Jews Show Solidarity With Persecuted Uyghurs

The Australian Jewish Association says Jews have a moral obligation to expose the persecution of Uyghur people in China.

It’s estimated that more than 1.5 million Uyghurs from the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China have been detained in re-education camps by Chinese Communist Party officials.

Jewish Association President, Dr David Adler has told Vision Radio, the “Never Again” principle associated with the Holocaust applies to any vulnerable minority facing persecution.

“It’s hard to draw comparisons with the Holocaust, of course, but given the history of the Jewish people, we recognise some similar elements and I feel that we have a strong moral imperative to call out such strong persecution,” Dr Adler says.

“Some of the things we’ve heard – forced labour bordering on slavery, removal of people from their families into these re-education or detention camps, possibly forced sterilisation – [are] quite horrific reports.”

Dr Adler says international silence on the issue is linked to China’s economic and military power.

The Australian Jewish Association is hosting a free Zoom presentation on the issue at 8:00 pm tonight AEDT, with details on the group’s Facebook page.

Religious liberty watchdogs have also reported numerous instances of persecution against Christians in China, including the removal of crosses from churches, arrests, interrogations, government surveillance, and loss of property.
