Australia violated the human rights of a child who was born in an Adelaide prison, Iran will assert at a special United Nations hearing.
Iran will on Wednesday grill Australia over the treatment of a former Adelaide cleaner, who gave birth while in custody.
Australia’s human rights record will be examined by the United Nations Human Rights Council, as part of a universal periodic review process.
Countries including Sweden, Uruguay and England have submitted 30 questions relating to Australia’s human rights laws.
Iran will specifically focus on the extradition of Negar Ghodskani, who was pregnant at the time of her arrest in 2017.
She gave birth to her son Nickan while in custody at Adelaide Women’s Prison as she battled extradition to the US on conspiracy charges.
In a question submitted to the UN, Iran officials assert that Ghodskani’s child’s human rights were violated.
“On what sound legal basis does Australia decide to execute requests for arbitrary detention and extradition of persons accused of circumventing the United States’ unlawful unilateral economic sanctions against targeted States?” the question says.
“She was not even granted bail to leave the prison for giving birth to her child.human
