An anti-Semitic graffiti attack at a synagogue in Melbourne’s east has left Jewish community leaders sickened over the “call for violence”.
A Melbourne synagogue has been the target of a sickening anti-Semitic graffiti attack.
A billboard advertising celebrations for Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, was vandalised overnight with a message saying “stop the Jews at Warburton”.
Anti-Defamation Commission chairman Dr Dvir Abramovich said the slogan was a “bone-chilling call for violence”.
“I am angry at this disgusting, hateful graffiti, and understand why some members of the Jewish community feel under siege,” Dr Abramovich said.
“The voices of evil are out in force, and we cannot allow such incidents to become the new normal.”
It is unclear precisely what the vandal’s reference to Warburton meant.
The Jewish community celebrated Rosh Hashana over two days, between Sunday evening and Tuesday evening.
Dr Abramovich said the graffiti “reminds us that there are hardcore bigots in our midst”, and marred what ought to have been a happy celebration.
“It seems that not a day goes by without obscene anti-Semitic vandalism disrupting members of the Jewish community’s lives, and this one, during our High Holidays, is especially sickening,” he said.
