Items seen for sale at an antiques fair in Coomera on Saturday.

Why sale of Nazi memorabilia should be banned

Twice already this year we have seen the vilest of items on sale on the Gold Coast. Here’s how this sick trade can be stopped.

Some people collect stamps. Some people collect dolls. Some baseball caps or footy shorts.

It’s not for everyone, but all very innocent.

Who though, in their right mind, collects Nazi memorabilia?

It’s astonishing to report that, although we’re only 18 days into 2023, Nazi items have already been publicly offered for sale twice on the Gold Coast. On January 6 it was reported that the Danielle Elizabeth antique auction house in Southport was hosting an online auction of 166 lots, most of them Nazi militaria and Holocaust artefacts supplied by the ailing son of a German SS officer.

Among the items offered for sale was a sign dating from 1938 reading ‘Jews Unwanted’.

Last Saturday, Nazi memorabilia was again offered for sale in the city, this time at an antiques fair in Coomera, before the vile items were removed following a complaint.

Bullets, swords and flags bearing the swastika were among the items seen on sale.

When pressed, sellers behind these auctions often say the items are being sold to “collectors”.

The big question is who these collectors might be. Why would anyone want to own such items?
