Say hello to Lox in a Box’s new Corner Deli, brimming with bagels, babka French toast, salt beef sandwiches and more Jewish-inspired delights.
Lox in a Box opened Corner Deli at the former Cornersmith site in Marrickville at the weekend, offering Sydney’s first bagel high tea.
It is the fifth (and first eat-in) venue from the Jewish-inspired deli, founded by wife-and-wife team Candy Berger and Gaia Lovell. The pair have garnered a loyal following for their comparatively fluffy Polish-style bagels and family recipes since first opening in 2019.
Tiers of freshly baked bagels, three types of house-made pickles (kosher, sour dill and bread and butter) and toppings such as smoked salmon lox, pastrami and cream cheese spread will feature as part of the high tea offering, available exclusively at the Illawarra Road deli for $56 (shared between two).
Berger tells Good Food the larger kitchen and eat-in bench seating has allowed them to introduce several wish list menu items, like her 87-year-old grandmother Lynne (Linny) Shore’s matzah ball soup.
“Linny herself came and made the first batch, showing everyone how to hand roll them,” Berger says.
“My career first started in her tiny kitchen and we have a really tight bond. At the [soft launch], she waltzed in, put her bag on the counter, grabbed a bagel out of the deli fridge and asked to see her [namesake] latkes.
“She’s an amazing woman, with such a big personality.”
