It was meant to be a simple coffee date between two women in an affluent eastern suburb of Sydney.
But it quickly turned into a frenzy when a motorcade, bodyguards, sirens and a squad of police descended on a Rose Bay kosher cafe on Thursday.
The Israeli prime minister’s wife, Sara Netanyahu, was to meet her Australian counterpart.
Lucy Turnbull arrived first with what seemed like a standard entourage.
But security for the Australian PM’s wife was quickly outflanked by Ms Netanyahu’s security team who arrived with a posse of bodyguards and a long police motorcade which brought the busy road to a standstill.
Curious onlookers wondered what all the fuss was about.
Inside, patrons at Jesse’s Cafe swamped the women for photos before they took their seats for an hour-long coffee.
As they chatted, tense bodyguards removed two people who weren’t identified as regulars.
Local mum Amy said while the level of security was “nuts”, it was also necessary.
“If you have someone of this importance from a place which has a lot of people against one another it’s important to have the right security,” she told AAP.
