Police move to bring private Jewish guard on patrols questioned by union

VICTORIA Police will take a private security guard dedicated to protecting Jewish schools and religious sites on a four-day “ride-along’’.

The patrols will take place during the Jewish New Year — Rosh Hashana — and the ­religion’s holiest day of the year — Yom Kippur.

Two police officers will escort the Community Security Group guard on patrols across the Glen Eira and Port Phillip region on September 21 and 22 and September 29 and 30. But the “ride-along’’ has caused angst with police members.

Correspondence between The Police Association of ­Victoria to Victoria Police have flagged concerns over the move to allow a private group access to police methodology, communications and the ­potential for the guard to be a liability if a critical incident ­were to occur.
