Former Labor foreign minister Bob Carr says he “can’t believe” federal MP Michael Danby used taxpayer funds a second time to pay for an advertisement attacking the ABC’s coverage of Israel and Palestine.
In a direct attack on his Labor colleague yesterday, Mr Carr also tweeted that a first taxpayer-funded ad Mr Danby placed in Australian Jewish News to criticise the ABC’s Jerusalem correspondent Sophie McNeill was “wild, nasty and tinged by mania”.
Mr Danby is under pressure to repay funds used for the ad after being confronted by federal Labor leader Bill Shorten on Wednesday, amid accusations he might have misused his parliamentary allowance for a personal crusade.
The Australian has confirmed the Opposition Leader is “deeply unimpressed” with Mr Danby’s ad campaign against McNeill, a Walkley Award-winning journalist, and ordered Mr Danby to withdraw a second ad planned for the Jewish community newspaper.
