Siblings assaulted in unprovoked attack feared to be anti-Semitic

TWO people have been assaulted and stabbed in an unprovoked attack in Melbourne’s southeast.

Police are investigating after a 22-year-old man and his 25-year-old sister were set upon by an unknown man in an unprovoked attack in Caulfield North about 7.30pm on Saturday night.

Investigators have been told the Jewish siblings, wearing religious garb, were standing outside a home on Inkerman St when the incident occurred.

The young man was struck on the head while his sister suffered cuts to her shoulder and cheek with an unknown object before the attacker walked away.

The woman was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries while the man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Anti-Defamation Commission Chairman Dr Dvir Abramovich said no one should be targeted and singled out for violence because of their physical appearance.

“If this assault, which is shocking on many levels, was in fact driven by anti-Semitism, it should be investigated as a hate-crime,” Dr Abramovich said.
