Eva Schloss, the stepsister and childhood friend of Anne Frank, will speak at the Michael D. Rose Theatre at the University of Memphis on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m.
The Holocaust survivor will talk about rebuilding her life and establishing herself as an internationally respected humanitarian. The event will be suitable for students and adults of all faiths, according to the Chabad Center for Jewish Life, which is hosting Schloss’ appearance.
A recent documentary by The New York Times of Schloss partaking in a virtual Holocaust testimonial project was among 10 contenders for the Documentary Short Subject category at the 90th Academy Awards.
“We are honored and excited to play host to this courageous individual,” said Rabbi Levi Klein, director of the Chabad Center for Jewish Life. “As the number of living Holocaust survivors becomes fewer, now, more than ever, we need to listen to their stories and learn from their horrific experiences.”
Schloss’ visit comes the year of the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht. On Nov. 9-10, 1938, Nazis in Germany torched synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, schools and businesses and killed nearly 100 Jews. Also called the “Night of Broken Glass,” about 30,000 Jewish men were arrested after Kristallnacht and sent to Nazi concentration camps.
