Israeli Civil rights group: Proposed law may curtail power of nation’s Supreme Court

In western democracies, courts often hand down decisions that limit the powers of elected governments and uphold the rights of minorities or unpopular individuals.

The Association of Civil Rights in Israel, the equivalent of the American Civil Liberties Union represents many litigants who are seeking to uphold their rights under the country’s complex constitutional law framework.

The Executive Director of ACRI says a proposed law to be put to the Knesset, could reduce the Supreme Court’s oversight power and contribute to a ‘shrinking of the democratic space’ in Israel.
