When Jews were forced to either leave Spain and Portugal or convert to Catholicism, many converted so they did not have to leave their homes.

In the late 1500s, the city of Amsterdam was promising a life with no discrimination on the basis of religion.

Many of the “New Christians” moved to Amsterdam where they had to relearn the rites and rituals of their Jewish faith.
