Australia should be wary about involvement in the dispute between Iran and the United States, which could have the potential to escalate into open warfare.
Under the provisions of the accord with Iran in 2015, signatories provided Iran with economic sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on the country’s nuclear program.
Although there were some flaws in the agreement, at least Iran’s nuclear program was being curtailed.
President Donald Trump’s decision to abandon the accord and reintroduce trade sanctions, in spite of opposition from European countries, has resulted in retaliation from both sides and spread to involvement of other countries.
Instead of joining the US in patrols of the Strait of Hormuz, we should take a neutral stance and urge all parties to the negotiation table.
