The Ajax Thirds – keeping footy frum

What do you do if your faith prevents you from playing the sport you love? Orthodox Jews were never able to play in the Victorian Amateur Football League because the games are on Saturdays, the Jewish Sabbath. That’s until they formed their own team and got permission to shift their games to Sundays. They play in yarmulkes and wear tzitzit under their jumpers, but in every other way look and sound like your average Aussie Rules footy players.

Three sided soccer – yes, it’s a sport!
And by way of inspiration, among the more curious of sports there’s one invented in the 1960s by a Danish avant-garde artist, Asger Jorn. It’s three sided soccer. You play it on a hexagonal pitch with 3 goals between 3 competing teams. It was designed to disrupt bipolar notions of the class struggle! Nowadays people play it because it’s fun.
