CHILDHOOD memories for Vaucluse restaurateur Michael Cthurmer are centred around food, more particularly of the Israeli street food served in the homes and restaurants of Hadera near Tel Aviv.
“When I was growing up it was hummus, hummus and more hummus,” Mr Cthurmer said.
So it was a natural progression for him and his wife Deborah to open up My Little Israel right next door to their other popular eatery The Grumpy Baker at Vaucluse.
Here you will find simple, rustic food like no other in the area — it’s packed with exotic flavour and cooked over a charcoal grill just as it has been done in Israel for generations.
“It’s all based on food that I grew up with which is the eggplant, the hummus, the chicken liver, the fillet steak, but everything is in a pita pocket bread and everything we bake in a wood fired oven so it’s got a wonderful charcoal flavour,” he said.
