The story of Jewish-Australians’ role in military conflict is also that of a shadow battle waged against prejudices about Jews as warriors. Against stereotypes that they were shirkers or not loyal to their country. Against anti-Semitic claims that all wars were the fault of Jewish bankers. Jewish Anzacs starts with the first Jewish free settler to fight for the colony against the Sudanese in 1885 and traces the involvement of Jews in almost every Australian military conflict up to the present.
This is a review by Fiona Capp of Jewish Anzacs by Mark Dapin in the Sydney Morning Herald.
