But the image did not capture the tense and angry moments that followed.
On Wednesday night, two days after the bombing that killed 22 people after an Ariana Grande concert, mourners gathered to pay their respects and reflect on the tragedy that had befallen their city.
Sadiq Patel, 46, was escorting Renee Rachel Black, 93, into the centre of town to do her shopping. Among the items on her shopping list was kosher meat, she said.
