In some ways 13-year-old Hayaat and her family live a life you’ll recognise. They bicker in the supermarket. They pass judgment on TV talent quest contestants. Granny needs a new hip.

But in most respects their day-to-day is almost beyond our capacity to imagine.

Hayaat’s family live in modern-day Bethlehem, a city divided by a colossal concrete wall and in which all movement is governed by constantly changing curfews and Israeli checkpoints. Streets that had names, which used to bustle, are blocked, overshadowed and left to wither.
