Anaconda founder Ben Cowen dies in Fairhaven paragliding accident

THE man who died in a paragliding accident at Fairhaven was the founder of camping megastore chain Anaconda, Ben Cowen.

Mr Cowen, the son of former Governor-General Sir Zelman Cowen, was paragliding on Sunday afternoon when he was caught in strong winds.

It is understood he was thrown into a cliff face and plunged more than 15m onto the road near the Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club.

The 50-year-old, a keen adventurer, had been on holiday with his wife and their three children.

In 2003 he co-founded, funded and launched adventure megastore Anaconda.

He sold out of the chain in the late 2000s and founded Edison Partners, a boutique advisory firm.

Mr Cowen has also made a significant contribution to the Jewish community.
