Ethnic communities have offered in-principle support for process tweaks at the Australian Human Rights Commission but will oppose proposed changes to section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act.
Multicultural groups, which successfully campaigned against moves by the Abbott government to reform race laws, are expected to mobilise against an 18C overhaul.
Leaders from the Jewish, Arab, Chinese, Greek, Indian and Vietnamese communities were unanimous in their opposition to the 18C changes yesterday.
