Brighton siege: Terror links probed after deadly Melbourne hostage situation

Police are investigating links to terrorism after a hostage situation in Melbourne left two people dead and three police officers shot.

Authorities were called to the serviced apartment building on Bay Street in Brighton at 4pm after receiving reports of an explosion.

“A short time later a phone call was made to Triple Zero stating there was a hostage situation,” Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp told reporters at the scene.

When authorities arrived at the building they located a man’s body in the foyer.

Authorities said the gunman held a woman hostage inside the apartment building for at least two hours before he exited the unit and fired at police.
