Review: Flashes of panto as Geli reveals Hitler’s incestuous secret

Geli
Globe Players, Richmond Theatrette, until May 5

Playwright Enzo Condello got the idea for Geli from his brother, slain underworld figure Mario Condello, before the latter was gunned down at the height of Melbourne’s gangland war. Getting it to the stage has proved a long road, with a previous attempt cancelled under controversial circumstances.  And the play courts controversy, no doubt about that.

It’s inspired by the short life of Hitler’s half-niece Geli Raubal, about whom there’s endless speculation. She was close to her uncle; rumours of a sexual relationship abounded. How much truth lay behind them is unknown: Geli committed suicide at the age of 23, and Hitler – well, if you’ve got genocide on your resume, no one’s going to raise an eyebrow at incest.
