Australian actress Ruby Rose will become television’s first lesbian Batwoman in a new series being developed for American television.
She will play Kate Kane, a gay Jewish heiress and highly trained street fighter out to destroy Gotham city’s criminal hordes.
Ms Kane is the first out gay or lesbian to lead a superhero action show.
But in an extra twist, she must also overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
Ironically, Batwoman was first introduced to DC Comics in 1956 as Batman’s girlfriend, to counter persistent claims the caped crusader was gay and had been created, along with Robin the Boy Wonder, to promote homosexuality.
