Andrew Wilkie presses Scott Morrison for clarity on Israel policy

Crossbench MPs are pushing Scott Morrison to announce a final position on the possible relocation of the Australian embassy in Israel to West Jerusalem as the Coalition braces for minority government.

Tasmanian MP Andrew Wilkie told The Australian yesterday the public deserved to know the Coalition’s final position sooner rather than later and attacked the Prime Minister’s decision to confer with cabinet colleagues and world leaders over coming months.

Mr Wilkie said the foreshadowing of a potential change in policy was driven by the Wentworth by-election. He labelled any decision to shift the embassy from its current location in Tel Aviv to West Jerusalem as a “counter-productive” move in the style of Donald Trump.

“Now that Scott Morrison’s domestic imperative is behind him, the community expects to hear his latest position on the issue. It’s not good enough to let it hang off the promise of a review when the community rightly wants to know the Prime Minister’s policy position,” he said.
