The way forward to peace is often through a show of strength and resolute action.
As we’ve seen in the Middle East, endless negotiations and light-footed diplomacy have proven abject failures for more than half a century.
So the world can only hope that hawkish Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s record fifth term election win will lead down the path of peace, as US President Donald Trump hopes.
As RAW reports, it was a clear path to re-election for Netanyahu on Wednesday, securing a parliamentary majority through religious-rightist parties despite the close contest with his main centrist challenger.
According to Netanyahu, Trump phoned him on a flight to Texas on Air Force One, to congratulate him on his recent repeated victory.
Netanyahu tweeted about the call on Wednesday:
‘Trump warmly congratulated (me) and the Israeli people.
‘[I] thanked President Trump for his tremendous support for Israel, including recognition of Jerusalem and the Golan.’
Trump and Netanyahu’s close relationship was no secret during the election campaign, with many billboards being erected of the two leaders smiling and shaking hands.
Netanyahu says that during the congratulatory call, he thanked Trump for declaring Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation earlier this week.
