THE Cairns Jewish Community has been growing a small forest in the heart of the city to celebrate the Jewish New Year for trees and nature.
Tree planting is part of the traditional celebrations of the holiday Tu B’Shevat, the 15th day of the Jewish month of Shevat, which started last night and marks the beginning of a new year for trees and plant life.
This year the community planted 100 melaleuca trees at their usual spot on Russell St at Edge Hill.
Cairns Jewish Community rabbi Ari Rubin said it was great to see the area grow over the four years they’d been planting trees there.
“Every year it grows stronger,” he said.
“This year we were planting our trees right next to the ones that we planted four years ago.
