Queensland Holocaust museum announced with site still required

The Federal Government has pledged to provide $3.5 million in funding towards establishing a new museum a local community has been pushing “for years”.

The State Government is being encouraged to stump up cash and land for a Holocaust museum in Brisbane after $3.5 million of funding was committed by the Federal Government.

Senator Amanda Stoker said the new Commonwealth funding marked the beginning of the Holocaust museum that Queensland’s Jewish community had been pushing “for years”.

“It’s a darn good start but we’re also open to receiving a contribution from the State Government,” Senator Stoker said.

She said that the museum project was in its infancy, with a site for the museum not yet found.

“It’s hoped a location will be found somewhere that is accessible to all Queenslanders, hopefully in the CBD or South Bank precincts,” she said.

Queensland Jewish Board of Deputies vice-president Jason Steinberg said that the museum “has to be in Brisbane” and any funding or potential site offers from Brisbane City Council and the State Government would be welcomed.

“I know that the State Government is committed to having a strong, multicultural city,” Mr Steinberg said.

“Their support financially and in securing land is welcomed.”

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said he provided a letter of support for the proposal in January.
