Stories that change us: Hanukkah, Vida Goldstein and beyond

Have you got a holiday reading list already on the make? Or perhaps, in light of Hanukkah or Christmas, it’s a time to dwell with profound stories of faith?

Award-winning biographer Jacqueline Kent joins Meredith Lake to discuss the story of suffragist and feminist, Vida Goldstein.

One of the first women to actually stand for election to an Australian parliament, Vida was a social reformer, peace activist – and, someone with a voracious interest in the life of the spirit.

Jacqueline describes Vida’s activism, and the challenge of bringing to the surface Vida’s very textured spirituality in her new book: Vida – A Woman For Our Time.

First though, the kind of story that anchors a whole community – even in difficult and disorienting seasons.

Writer and critic Tali Lavi is one of the programmers of Melbourne Jewish Book Week. She grew up in a modern, Orthodox Jewish family, and one of the most joyous things about that was celebrating Hannukah.

She tells Meredith how she plans to celebrate the Jewish festival this year, and reflects on how the pandemic has impacted her life as a reader.
