THE performers behind a production at a prominent entertainment venue have defended a New Year’s Day function that featured an actor portraying Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, saying they did not mean to offend viewers.
Attendees at Miami Marketta’s The Soundtrack event on Saturday said they were “furious” and offended by the sight of the infamous German politician being used in the performance by troupes Cocoloco and This is Art.
A Jewish tourist, who attended the event with a group of friends, told the Bulletin he was deeply upset.
“One of the people was dressed up as Hitler and it was quite shocking at first, but it left us all quite rattled,” said the man, who asked not to be identified, fearing reprisal for speaking out.
“It is totally overstepping the mark and we were quite angry.”
The man was among several who complained to on-site management at the event.
The tourist said he and his friends walked out of the event after being unimpressed with the response he received from staff when they asked for the performer to stop.
