Red tape prevents council from cleaning up racist graffiti

Red tape is preventing council from cleaning up ugly, racist graffiti from poles and electrical transformers, a council insider has revealed. WHAT’S THE HOLD-UP?

Red tape is preventing council from cleaning up ugly, racist graffiti from poles and electrical transformers, a Clarence City Council Alderman says.

James Walker said council currently needed to go through a tedious approvals process in order to obtain permission to remove graffiti from TasNetworks or NBN property.

Mr Walker said horrendous graffiti could hang around for months while council waits for approval to clean up non-council property.

At the next council meeting Mr Walker will propose council strike a deal with groups such as TasNetworks, Metro, and Australia Post who own property around the Clarence area.

Mr Walker said he wanted to cut down on bureaucracy so that council could stop unsightly and racist eyesores from blighting the streets of Clarence any longer than necessary.

“Racist graffiti is repugnant, it’s not enough to be condemned, it needs to be promptly removed,” Mr Walker said.

“The longer this type of graffiti stays up the more harm it is doing.

“This is the sort of bureaucratic, roundabout process that drives everybody insane, including elected representatives.”

The motion will be voted on at the next Clarence City Council meeting on July 25.
