Hamas gunmen kill four in revenge raid

Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on Tuesday at a restaurant and petrol station near the Israeli settlement of Eli in the West Bank, killing four people and wounding four others, the latest in a string of violent attacks in the territory.

The Israeli military said the gunmen first opened fire at a restaurant, killing three, and then went to a nearby petrol station, where they killed a fourth person.

One of the shooters was killed by a civilian at the petrol station and the Israeli army tracked down and killed the second shooter after he fled the scene in a stolen vehicle.

The Israeli military said the Palestinian gunmen were affiliated with Hamas, an Australian and US-designated terrorist organisation that controls the Gaza Strip and has a militant presence in the West Bank.

The shooting came a day after a gunbattle between Palestinian militants and Israeli troops who had raided the West Bank city of Jenin to arrest suspected militants. That shootout left six Palestinians dead, including a teenager, and more than 90 injured.

Seven Israeli troops were also injured during the Jenin gun battle after militants ambushed the Israeli convoy with a rare use of an advanced improvised explosive device that struck an armoured vehicle. The Israeli military used airstrikes from helicopters for the first time in many years in the West Bank to aid the extraction of ambushed troops.
