The Federal Opposition says it will make the $11 million redevelopment of the Perth Jewish Community Centre in Yokine a reality if elected.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison called the Federal election for May 21 this week, just as Labor has promised to put $100,000 towards the project which will give members of Perth’s Jewish community a welcoming place to gather.
Maccabi WA will demolish its centre on Woodrow Avenue in Yokine — which the Jewish community has called home since 1952 — and replace it with a two-storey community and childcare centre and cafe.
While the centre will be used for functions, youth groups and offices for Jewish community organisations, it will also be a Holocaust education centre.
The education centre will also incorporate a memorial to Aboriginal social justice activist William Cooper, who led an historic protest against the Nazis’ mistreatment of Jewish people in 1938.
The childcare centre will also have a maximum of 120 children and 19 staff members and can only operate between 6.30am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday.
There will also be significant security upgrades to ensure patrons are protected.
Perth MHR Patrick Gorman said Maccabi WA had developed a strong vision for the project.
