The governing body of America’s Presbyterian Church has formally ruled that the laws, policies, and practices of Israel concerning the Palestinian people, are the equivalent of ‘apartheid’.
The resolution was overwhelmingly passed by 266-116 in a vote at the church’s General Assembly.
It was immediately condemned by Jewish groups.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center called the vote “an insult to Jews and Christians alike.”
It accused church leaders of giving their members false and misleading information.
Its Director of United Nations Relations Rabbi Eric J. Greenberg said: “The PCUSA leadership has violated G-d’s commandment not to bear false witness; rendered itself irrelevant in the world of peacemaking; and made a mockery of honest dialogue and interfaith relations.”
The Center declared the vote was the culmination of a decade-long anti-Israel, anti-Jewish agenda from the church’s leadership in Louisville, Kentucky.
Prior to the vote, the American Jewish Congress labeled the resolution as “unjust” and “just plain wrong.”
Activist group Presbyterians for Middle East Peace pointed out the resolution breaches the church’s own policies.
