PATIENTS at Randwick’s Prince of Wales Hospital will be shown an extra bit of love this Valentine’s Day when a father and daughter team give out 350 red roses to those who can’t be with their families.
Michael Rubinstein and his daughter Talia, 17, of Dover Heights, spend four hours every year on February 14 speaking to patients on the wards and in the emergency department before handing them a flower.
They also spend two hours visiting the Wolper Jewish Hospital in Woollahra.
Mr Rubinstein said the idea came about several years ago when he heard female employees at his company lamenting they did not receive a rose on Valentine’s Day.
“This was very easy for me to fix,” he said. “I decided to get some roses for the girls at work.
“I did that for a number of years.”
When his grandmother was admitted to hospital, Mr Rubinstein decided to take her a Valentine’s Day rose and hand others out to patients.
“The year later my daughter said she would love to do it with me,” he said. “We contacted the Prince of Wales and so it began.
“It’s a good way to spend some quality time with my daughter.”
