Government cannot take a ‘strident, pro-Israel position’

Sydney Morning Herald Political Editor Peter Hartcher has told Sky News the government’s proposal to move Australia’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem will not go ahead due to Indonesia’s ‘hostility’ to the idea. Prime Minister Scott Morrison says he has spoken to Indonesian President Joko Widodo on Tuesday about the proposal after reports Australia’s closest neighbour is vehemently opposed to the idea. Mr Hartcher says since Australia has such close ties to Indonesia, it cannot take a ‘strident, pro-Israel position’ on foreign policy matters.
