Last week, US Vice President Mike Pence invited a Messianic Jewish leader onstage during a rally to pray for victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting.
The decision sparked condemnation from Jewish leaders on both sides of politics. They say the Messianic tradition — which views Jesus as the Messiah — is a form of Christianity, not Judaism.
So, how do Messianic Jews define their controversial faith?
